The term metaplastic (chronic) atrophic gastritis, also referred to as gastric atrophy, is used to describe a form of chronic gastritis that, in addition to inflammation, is associated with mucosal thinning, loss of specialized cells in gastric glands, and changes in epithelial cell types (ie, metaplasia). WebChronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is the final consequence of an inflammatory process that ultimately leads to loss of appropriate mucosal glands. This histological alteration may be due to an autoimmune-mediated reaction directed towards parietal cells or their components, or may be associated to infection with Helicobacter pylori ( 1 ).
